Ammonium Hydroxide formula is a topic of constant debate among many. It is because Ammonium hydroxide is basically a solution of ammonia in water. Even though the name suggests an alkali with the composition of NH4+ and OH− ions, in practicality it is impossible to isolate samples of ammonium hydroxide. Furthermore, the ions also do not account for a significant fraction of the total amount of ammonia.

Preparation

The ammonium hydroxide is made mostly by the direct reaction of the hydrogen and the nitrogen together, metal catalyzes it as an iron. Then we add the resulting ammonia to the water to make ammonium hydroxide.

Ammonium hydroxide is a colorless liquid that has a highly pungent odor. Ammonium hydroxide has a density of 0.91 g/mL-1. The melting point is -57.5oC and it has a boiling point of 37oC. It is highly miscible with the water.

Basicity of Ammonia in Water

In an aqueous solution, the ammonia deprotonates a minimal fraction of the water to provide ammonium and hydroxide:

Uses

Ammonium hydroxide’s most common use is as a household cleaner, for this purpose it comes in use as a solution of 1-3%. In some chemical processes, we can use it as a precursor to form the alkylamines. Moreover, we also use the Ammonium hydroxide as an acidity regulator to reduce the acidity in food due to the release of the hydroxide in the solution.

Ammonium hydroxide can also cause severe damage to the eyes and the skin. It is very toxic to aquatic life at the same time.

Laboratory Use

Many traditional qualitative inorganic analysis uses aqueous ammonia as a complex ant and base. Like multiple amines, it provides a deep blue color with copper (II) solutions. However, the ammonia solution can dissolve the silver oxide residues, such as those formed from Tollens’ reagent. It is also present in the solutions we generally use to clean gold, silver, and platinum jewellery also but may have adverse effects on porous gemstones such as the opals and the pearls.

Saturated Solutions of Ammonium Hydroxide

The solubility of ammonia decreases with the increase in temperature of the water solvent. It can be observed that this behaviour of ammonia is quite similar to that of other gases. The solution of ammonia in water exhibits a decrease in its density with the increase in the concentration of dissolved ammonia.

The density of a saturated ammonium hydroxide solution at 288.75 K is equal to 0.88 grams per mole. This saturated solution of ammonium hydroxide would contain approximately 35.6% ammonia by mass which corresponds to 308 grams of ammonia per litre of saturated ammonium hydroxide solution.

Ammonium Hydroxide Hazards

As soon as possible, evacuate the patient to a secure place. Lose the fitting clothes, such as a shirt, a scarf, a belt or a waistband. If ventilation is difficult, use oxygen. If the patient is not alive, make a mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
